Major Arcana Deck Names / Titles - Using Adjectives, Nouns and Verbs

The tables on this page are an attempt to embellish each of the iconic names of the Major Trumps, put forth elsewhere, with a preceding adjective and subsequent verb. In each case, words have been chosen for how well they work together as a set of ideas that span a spectrum of possibilities (see the essay A Spectrum of Possibilities elsewhere on this site). Elsewhere on this site there will be found a new grammatical term for this kind of word association, called varonyms. Varonyms are part of a special grammatical terminology that has been invented (on this site), to assist in the SEMANTICS of tarot interpretation (see the essay The Importance of Words elsewhere on this site). By bolstering each subjective interpretation suggested with additional variations, this system attempts to increase the specificity of its viewpoint, relative to others, by showing where along a spectrum of possibilities an interpretation resides. My subjective sense of the severity of a given word may be different than someone else's, and theirs from mine. By offering a full spectrum of possibilities with each word offered, ambiguity between us is reduced and clarity of communication is increased.

Before each set of names there is a short etymological path. Here is where we see how each name is part of a set of ideas, born out of an evolution of ideas, that attempt to span the traverse from relatively abstract concepts to totally subjective characters. One could of course include more steps in this etymological traverse than the ones used here. I am hoping that the greater simplicity will allow for easier digestion of the basic idea being used - etymological traverse (see the essay Numerical Etymology elsewhere on this site).

How to read each of the lines in the chart below:
Abstract Core Concept + Antithetical Modifiers + Spectroanalysis = New Iconic Name
Take an abstract concept. Filter it through two antithetical modifiers. Then filter it again, by separating into extremes and inbetweens.

To see where each of my abstract core concepts came from, go to the interpretation pages and examine the links found on any of the Keyword charts. Or, better yet, go to the BOOK section of this site and click on the MORE link.

NOTE: Unfortunately, none of these charts are likely to impress anyone that much, without a complete understanding of the logic behind the evolution of each core, abstract, metaphysical concept being used. Without a complete understanding of the logic used to create each core, abstract, metaphysical concept, one might think that I just brainstormed a select assortment of concepts and arbitrarily associated them to various numbers, based on something as subjective as the names they lead to, or worse yet, the images of an existing tarot deck! To understand how this is NOT so, I suggest reading as much from every other part of this site as possible, particularly the Book section... particularly the book All Things Are Numbers.

Also Note: The New Iconic Names created below are just one possible outcome to a process of analysis that is based on the number line of numerology, as described by the patterns in nature, discussed in the book "All Things Are Numbers." We could have started with different core concepts than the ones I've used here, and ended up with different Iconic Names, and still have been true to the essence of that number's influence. For example: I chose to bring out the idea of vision that is found in the number 2. But the number 2 also influences motion and direction, as well as balance and harmony. By focusing on vision, both literal and figurative, I created an icon that is similar to the more traditional High Priestess, a woman of mysteries. If I had focused more on the balance and harmony of a 2, I probably would have come up with an iconic name that would have been similar to the more traditional card of Justice. Another example: I chose to focus on the idea of endings that is found in the number 9. But the number 9 is also the number of order and chaos, sanity and insanity. By focusing on endings I created an icon that is similar to the more traditional Hermit, a consummate figure. If I had focused more on the sanity and insanity of a 9, I probably would have come up with an iconic name that would have coincided more with the idea of lunacy found in the more traditional Moon card. This is why it is important to combine each Minor Suit card of this deck with its corresponding Major Trumps card. In the 2 of Addition/Diamond/Coin, the idea of motion and direction is covered. In the 2 of Multiplication/Heart/Cup, the idea of balance and harmony is covered. In the 9 of Division/Spade/Sword, the idea of insanity of covered. Of course, one will probably only see these kinds of connections and correlations if they arrange thier tarot deck the "All Things Are Numbers" way! If this specific arrangement is unfamiliar, it would probably be best if the Two Cent Tour was read first, before continuing on any further.

One more Special Note: The observant reader will notice, as they examine this page, a few words that they have probably never heard of! That's right, I make up words! The process of sorting language into extremes and inbetweens (a.k.a. varonyms) is not easy (see the essay The Importance of Words elsewhere on this site). In some cases there just isn't an appropriate word in existence to use! Or, if I find one word that works, I can find no others for expressing the same essence somewhere else and not repeating the same word over and over. Maybe that's why no one (that I know of) has ever done this before - it's just too hard. Feel free to suggest improvements!
